Overview

5G represents the fifth generation of cellular network technology, succeeding 4G and ushering in an era of significantly enhanced mobile communication capabilities. Developed under the auspices of the [[3gpp|3rd Generation Partnership Project (3GPP)]] and the [[itu|International Telecommunication Union (ITU)]]'s IMT-2020 program, 5G networks are architected with smaller coverage zones (cells) that connect devices to local base stations, which in turn link to the wider network via high-speed fiber or wireless backhaul. These improvements are foundational for supporting a new wave of applications, from [[extended-reality|extended reality (XR)]] and [[autonomous-vehicles|autonomous vehicles]] to remote healthcare and widespread [[internet-of-things|Internet of Things (IoT)]] deployments, promising to connect billions more devices and reshape digital interaction.
